Today is at leisure for you to explore and experience the many museums, monuments and historical sites of this fascinating capital city, for example ,the Lincoln Memorial, where Martin Luther King Junior delivered his famous 'I Have a Dream' speech, the National Gallery of Art and the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History.
Start your day with a transfer to Washington DC Union station by coach to catch an overnight train to Chicago, along the historic B&O line through the Potomac Valley, showcasing the breathtaking sceneries of the United States. We will pass the historic Harpers Ferry and the Allegheny Mountains on the way to Pittsburgh, crossing into Ohio and heading north to Cleveland across Indiana as the train continues through the night.
After arriving in Chicago, the capital of Illinois, enjoy a stunning sightseeing tour of famous landmarks such as the Willis Tower and Millennium Park, the headquarters of the infamous Al Capone, and the site of the St Valentine's Day Massacre. Spend the evening enjoying dinner and live music.
This morning, embark on a cruise showcasing Chicago's impressive architecture, setting off from the activity filled Navy Pier. The rest of the day and evening are at leisure for you to further explore the 'Windy City'. For food we recommend trying a Chicago specialty, the traditional deep-dish pizza.
Today, enjoy your morning at leisure to relax or take in some last minute sightseeing, before transferring to Chicago Union Station by coach for your overnight train to Grand Junction, travelling through the cornfields and plains of Iowa and Nebraska.

Today, make your way along the Million Dollar Highway to Silverton by coach, enjoying the 'wild west' scenery Hollywood has made famous around the world. After a leisurely lunch, at your own pace, and a chance to browse the shops in Silverton, head to Durango along the famous Durango and Silverton railroad, travelling past canyons, emerald-green rivers and desolate wilderness.
Depart Durango hopping on the coach and heading towards Flagstaff, stopping at the red-sand desert region of Monument Valley for a scenic tour of this ancient site famous for its towering sandstone structures.
Our journey begins along the legendary Route 66 towards Williams, where we join the Grand Canyon Railway. The train ride takes you through picturesque terrains, pulled by historic locomotives, until you reach the spectacular Grand Canyon. Gaze down into the chasm as the Colorado River rushes below and admire this natural phenomenon from the South Rim. Later return to Flagstaff and enjoy the evening at leisure.
Continue your journey along Route 66, passing through Seligman, a quirky small town along a preserved section of Route 66 that captures a vibrant slice of Americana. Continue onwards to experience the neon vibrancy of Las Vegas.
Depart Las Vegas, travelling across the vast desert to Los Angeles. Upon arrival, a fascinating guided tour commences, taking you to stroll along the star-studded Hollywood Walk of Fame, witness the iconic Hollywood sign, then continue to Beverly Hills, a sophisticated haven of glamorous mansions and star estates. As we arrive at your hotel for the night, we bid farewell to our coach driver.
Today, travel by coach to Union Station to catch a Coast Starlight train to San Francisco. Upon arrival at Amtrak Station, you will be transferred to your hotel in San Francisco for the night.
This morning, embark on a coach tour of the charming San Francisco, admiring the laid-back vibes and colourful Victorian buildings. Visit Pier 39, a shopping district filled with arcades and restaurants. Witness the Golden Gate Bridge and Fisherman's Wharf on an evening cruise to Sunset Bay, and head back to your hotel for the night.

You will need to obtain an ESTA visa. This must be applied for at least 7 days before you are due to land in the USA. All UK passport holders must have a biometric e-passport and your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you are expected to arrive back in the UK. Important note: if you do not have a bio-metric e-passport, you will be refused entry into the USA. If booking more than 10 weeks before departure a deposit of €300pp will need to be paid at the time of booking with the full amount payable at 10 weeks prior to departure. The deposit applies to adults and children. If you are within 10 weeks of travel then the full balance of the holiday will be payable.
Your flight to New York is with Virgin Atlantic, departing from London Heathrow. Please note that all flight times and numbers listed above are provided for guidance only and are subject to change. Final flight details will be confirmed on your final documentation which will be sent to you approximately 10 days before departure. Each passenger is entitled to 23kg of hold luggage. There is also an allowance of one cabin bag not exceeding 25cm x 45cm x 56cm in size and one personal bag not exceeding 45 cm x 36 cm x 20 cm that you can take on the aircraft as hand luggage. Weight restrictions will be finalized on your e-ticket receipt. Should you wish to take additional luggage you will need to pay an additional fee for this at check-in. Heathrow Airport advises that you should arrive at the airport at least three hours prior to your flight time for international departures.

A printed E-ticket is no longer required at check-in, all you need to do is present your passport to the staff at the desk and your boarding pass will be given to you.

This tour is accessible to most people with a good level of fitness and normal mobility. It involves climbing of steep stairs and getting on and off coaches. This tour is not suitable for anyone with walking difficulties. All our tours feature a 'Tour Pace' to help find the right holiday for you. To travel on any of our tours requires unaided mobility and the ability to stroll around the sights, climb stairs and get on and off coaches and boats. The tour pace for America Coast to Coast by Rail is challenging. A higher level of fitness as required as you may be on your feet for most of the day though this will be interspersed with regular breaks and vary from day to day. You will be walking around the sights, getting on and off coaches, trains, boats and climbing steps which may be irregular. There may be some time spend at high altitude. You will stay in variety of hotels, possibly including overnight trains, and accommodation standards may not match those you are used to at home. Our guides will always endeavour to provide the highest level of service and assistance; however, they cannot be expected to cater for customers who are unfit to complete the itinerary.
The minimum number of travellers in your group will be 25, and the maximum will be 35. If in the unlikely event there are less than 25 people booked on your tour date, we will endeavour to reduce any disruption to your holiday and try to operate your tour with lower passenger numbers. If we are not able to operate your departure date, then you may be asked to change to a different date and a full refund will be made available to you should this alternative not be suitable.
This is a fully escorted tour, meaning that you will be met on arrival by your national guide who will remain with you for the duration of your trip. This ensures that you always have first-hand knowledge. Should the tour not meet minimum numbers, then it may be operated with local guides.
The currency in America is the United States Dollar (USD). You will be able to change currency both before you travel and whilst you are away. You will also have access to ATMs during your tour where you can withdraw money in the local currency.
You will need to take money with you to cover any personal purchases such as souvenirs, laundry, any meals not included in the itinerary as well as drinks and any additional snacks. Approximately £800- £1000 per person will be sufficient for the duration of the tour. It is a good idea to try and maintain a supply of small notes and change in the local currency for tipping or small purchases.
It is customary to tip both your driver and guide.
We would recommend to tip approximately USD$8 - $10 per day. This is a total of USD$136 - $160 per person to budget for tips on your trip.
Tipping will be collected throughout your tour and the Tour Leader would be tipped at the end of your trip. Tipping whilst on the trains is at your discretion, however we would suggest budgeting $10 per person, per night, however you will only need to tip based on the service you receive on the train
